Laser Hair Removal

Do you have unwanted body hair? Do you want to remove it? Some problems stem from excessive hair growth resulting from hormones, medications or genetics. Other problems arise from small amounts of hair that are located in undesirable places.

The simplest and least effective way to remove unwanted hair is by shaving. However, the process requires a constant commitment to maintaining a hair-free appearance. Plucking hair leaves a more cosmetically appealing result, but plucking is tedious, painful and impractical. Removing hair through waxing may result in months without hair re-growth, but the process is painful and can often cause allergic reactions and inflammation of the hair follicles. Laser Hair removal uses Electrolysis is currently the only permanent treatment for removing unwanted hair and has been effective, but because one can treat only a single hair at a time, electrolysis is a tedious, time-consuming process.

Treating hair with a laser offers an exciting alternative to these common hair removal methods. Lasers are precise instruments that can be adjusted to the exact parameters that will disable the hair follicle and leave the surrounding skin untouched. By using only light to remove hair, laser treatment inhibits the re-growth of the hair while not causing skin irritation.

The laser works by disabling the hairs that are actively growing. Other hairs will enter their growth cycle at different times, so additional laser treatments may be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.

The laser emits light that is only absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicle. The laser is pulsed for a fraction of a second. The duration of each pulse is just long enough to disable the follicle while not harming the surrounding skin.
Laser hair treatment may produce a tingling or slight stinging sensation, but most people tolerate the procedure well. Our Medlite IV Q-Switched ND-Yag laser is FDA approved for hair treatment. It is suitable for all skin types, skin colors and hair locations including; face, underarms and legs. We have experienced the best results by re-treating the same area a month after the first treatment. The amount of treatment time needed depends on the size of the area to be treated.

Obagi Blue Peel

The Obagi Blue Peel can help correct wrinkles, unwanted pigmentation, scars, large pores and non-facial skin conditions. This peel is a one to four step application of blue solution mixed with TCA (Trichloracetic Acid). The purpose of these applications is to remove thin surface layers of aged and damaged skin. Layers of dead skin cells exfoliate and are replaced by healthier ones allowing the skin's own clarity and tightness to resurface.

The Obagi Blue Peel is a superior chemical peel that achieves optimum results with unprecedented safety and a reduced recovery time. Obagi Blue Peel has a built in safety mechanism to avoid unnecessary depth by monitoring the even application of the blue color, which acts as a guide for the Blue Peel solution application. The treatment delivers a 7-10 day healing process, and can successfully treat all skin colors and all skin types.

The Blue Peel is done at the office, and the procedure takes anywhere from 35-45 minutes. The necessary amount of layers will depend on the individual patient’s needs, or the amount of skin damage.

For best results, skin should be pre-conditioned with Obagi home products for at least 4-6 weeks before the peel is done. All of the products are formulated to work in conjunction with the others, and with the Blue Peel.

Obagi Blue Peel is available at the Dermatology Center. The cost is $200 per layer of the 15 percent solution and $400 per layer of the 20 percent solution. For more information on Blue Peel treatments and a personal consultation, please contact The Dermatology Center for an appointment.

The Medlite Laser
Q-Switched Nd-YAG

The Medlite Laser, also known as the Q- Switched Nd-YAG laser, is the latest and most effective tool for the removal of tattoos, pigment lesions and thinning unwanted body hair. This precision laser uses high-intesity infrared or green light pulses to alter the skin to a desired state.

It works by 'exploding' pigment particles under the skin. The Medlite laser is more selective and accurate than other treatment options. Usually the Medlite laser requires little anesthesia, produces virtually no scar, and there is no significant color or texture change in skin. Most treated areas heal in four to six weeks.

The Medlite laser treatment is used extensively in tattoo removal. Tatoos date back at least 5,000 years, and the desire to have them removed probably dates back just as far. The procedure uses a beam of light that passes through the skin and is absorbed by the tattoo’s ink. The beam destroys the ink so it can be removed by the body’s natural filtering systems. There is little pain resulting from the treatment, and most patients do not require anesthesia. This treatment is most effective in removing dark inks. The procedure will most likely need to be repeated three to six times. In most cases, treatment will completely remove a tattoo.

From dark to medium to light tones, everyone’s skin has varying amounts of melanin. Melanin is what gives a skin its color. When a high concentration of melanin develops, a person’s skin forms a pigment lesion. Pigment lesions include birth marks, freckles, age spots, liver spots and other brownish colored spots. In laser treatment of such lesions, energy from a beam of light is absorbed by the melanin. This causes the pigment to break down, thus reducing the melanin concentration. The treated skin is left looking uniform in color and textures. This procedure usually only requires one treatment and is relatively painless.

Unwanted body hair is another common concern, and the thinning of this unwanted hair is a common procedure performed using the Medlite laser. This treatment offers a more successful alternative to shaving, waxing, tweezing, chemicals and electrolysis. The laser sends a burst of energy that damages the hair whole avoiding harm to the skin. Although this treatment is not permanent, it offers benefits in effectiveness, speed, comfort, recovery time and cost.

Omnilux Blue

The Omnilux Blue is a painless, non-invasive treatment for moderate inflammatory acne in all age groups. Omnilux Blue utilizes innovative Photo Dynamic Therapy technology to effectively target acne causing bacteria without thermally affecting the surrounding tissue.

Omnilux Blue utilizes a panel of over 1,700 focused diodes to insure proper power density over a uniform beam profile. It delivers a unique 408nm wavelength blue light that closely matches the peak absorption qualities of the targeted acne bacteria. This blue light creates a highly toxic environment for the superficial acne bacteria, which includes bacterial death and clears the skin from acne.

A typical treatment takes only 20 minutes. You can relax comfortably on a bed or chair during light application. Protective eye wear will be provided. There may be a slight warm sensation during treatment.

Omnilux Blue can clear most moderate inflammatory acne in as little as 8 treatment sessions (twice a week for 4 weeks). Your doctor can design the treatment plan that’s right for you. It’s important to adhere to the recommended treatment plan for maximum results.

Omnilux Blue is one of the safest acne treatments available. High spectral purity of the Omnilux Blue insures patients will not receive UV, IR or inappropriate visible radiation as with lasers and Intense Pulsed Light devices. Omnlux Blue therapy is both natural and non-invasive, glands will to their natural state without being thermally altered.
